Chapter 18: Empty Home

Noah’s knuckles crashed into Jeremiah’s jaw with a stomach-wrenching crunch. The man dropped to the ground and rolled to one side. He groaned and threw his hand up to cover his face. Noah noticed with some satisfaction that blood was dripping on the ground.

“Please!” Jeremiah pleaded, causing more blood from his lip to slide down his chin.

The three of them were in a clearing just off the road, a few hundred meters outside of the city. They made sure that they were clear of the city and thus the walking undead, which seemed to be much scarcer in the trees.

Noah said nothing. He grabbed Jeremiah by the collar and pulled him up from the ground. He drew back his fist again in order to repeat the strike, but Emma’s soft hand touched his blood-soaked fist.

“That is enough. Can’t you see that he is terrified?” Emma said in a hushed voice.

“This piece of trash served us up on a golden platter like lambs to slaughter. Why should I not take off his head right now?” Noah said, throwing the man down.

“What do you mean he served us up?” Emma asked.

Noah turned from the sight of Jeremiah on the ground. “You do not think they were just keeping us there to feed us. We were going to be served up next time they needed to feed the appetite of the monsters.” He turned back to Jeremiah. “Tell her, and if you lie, I will cut you down.”

“This is true. We were ordered to lock you up so that we would not have to turn over but one of our own,” Jeremiah admitted.

Noah drew his sword.

“I didn’t want to. There were many that didn’t want to. You deserved to go free, the curse did not apply to you,” Jeremiah said, shielding his face again.

Noah grunted and angrily sheathed his sword. He took a few steps away to fume for a few minutes. He grabbed the back of his head and yelled into the air in frustration.

“What in the gods below was that? Did you forget that we are surrounded by countless undead?” Emma asked, slapping him in the back.

“We cannot take him back. And you will not let me kill him. He does not deserve to die anyway,” Noah said with a sigh.

“We need to contact our lord before we make any decisions,” Emma said.

“I attempted it already. He still did not answer,” Noah said, shaking his head.

“Might I suggest—” Jeremiah started, but quickly fell to silence when both Noah and Emma sharply looked at him. “Apologies, but it is not safe in the wilderness.”

“What would you suggest?” Noah said, crossing his arms over his chest.

“There is a town not far from here. It was an abandoned project from a few years ago. We might be able to get some supplies, and we can wait out the nightfall until you can contact the lord that you spoke of. I did not mean to eavesdrop, but you were speaking very loudly,” Jeremiah said, holding up his hand.
